“You can teach your anatomy and physiology till you are black in the face; you still have to face this.” – FM Alexander – Articles and Lectures
What was he on about?
What I think he is saying is that you can know everything academically but if you don’t put it into practice it may be a waste of time learning it.
You need to live it to truly understand it!
I guess this applies to anything in life, not making that choice, putting it off for another day, not believing in yourself, succumbing to someone’s ideas whilst your stomach is screaming out – “DON’T DO IT”. Most of the time you know what is right, you only have to listen to your body. This muscle tightening comes from a thought to tighten the muscles, some thoughts are so beep inside us, that we don’t know they are there until a response to something or someone triggers the thought hence the muscles. My warning sign is butterflies in my stomach, you may have a tightening throat or back pain or something completely different.
The important thing is to notice whatever it is, if you miss it then you will move on to the next step from your memory, you may say yes when you mean no, it may be something you have regretted all your live but keep reliving it when someone provide a particular stimulus.
The first step of noticing my butterflies, pause of a moment to observe why my butterflies have arrived, On the surface I will play games of denying that I know why the butterflies are here, deep down I know; at the moment it’s normally something around stage fright.
A couple or more ideas can help resolve my fright, as they same on TV shows, in no particular order;
- Is it true that if I do it, I will spoil it?
- The truth is I don’t know, as it hasn’t happened yet
- Am I thinking ahead?
- Definitely, that’s why I’m worrying
- That’s why the butterflies have appeared.
- Bring yourself into the present time by noticing any tight muscles and allowing them to quieten.
- Have thoughts about your authenticity, you are real, you are here in this very moment, you are quietly in balance whilst you are standing or sitting. You have the capacity to move at any time.
- What shall I do with my butterflies
- Thank them but don’t push them away, you may need them for another time.
- You need warning signs but you don’t need to behave the way you did the last time the warning appeared.
- Time to make a decision.
- Just carry on as normal
- Say No
- Do something else
