The Simple Practice That Brings You Back to the Present
There are moments in life when the mind simply will not slow down.
Thoughts about the past replay themselves.
Concerns about the future quietly sit in the background.
And somewhere in the middle of all of that noise, the body tightens.
The shoulders lift.
The breathing becomes shallow.
Aches and pains begin to appear where there was once ease.
Yet the truth is remarkably simple: the body follows the mind.
When the mind settles, the body often follows very quickly.
One of the ways I help people experience this shift is through a gentle awareness exercise that reconnects you to your body, your surroundings and the present moment. It is not about escaping the room you are in or disappearing into your mind. In fact, it is the opposite.
It is about being fully here.
Staying Present Rather Than Going Inward
Many meditation practices encourage people to close their eyes and turn inward.
There is nothing wrong with that, but in my work I often guide people to remain aware of the room they are in. Eyes open. Present. Grounded in their environment.
Why?
Because life happens with your eyes open.
When you can find calm while fully present in the world around you, something profound happens. Your nervous system begins to settle while you remain engaged with life rather than retreating from it.
A very simple way to begin this process is through what I call connecting the heart.
The Heart Connection Practice
This exercise is surprisingly simple, yet very powerful.
Begin by becoming aware of your heart. You may wish to place your hand gently on your chest, although that is not necessary.
Keep your eyes open and allow yourself to notice the room around you.
Now, simply have a thought:
Connect your heart to your toes.
You may imagine this connection travelling through your bones, through your nerves, through your blood vessels, or simply as energy flowing through your body. There is no right or wrong way.
Then do something important.
Let the thought go.
Now begin again with a completely fresh thought.
Connect your heart to your toes… and let the thought go.
Repeat this a few times.
Each time you allow the thought to appear and then disappear.
Expanding the Awareness
Once this begins to feel natural, you can start connecting your heart to other places.
Connect your heart to your fingers… and let the thought go.
Connect your heart to your head… and let the thought go.
Then allow the connections to move around your body more freely.
Heart to toes.
Heart to fingers.
Heart to head.
Each time the thought appears, you simply allow it to pass.
You are not holding onto anything.
You are allowing movement rather than resistance.
Connecting With Your Environment
Now the practice expands further.
Connect your heart to the chair you are sitting on.
Connect your heart to the floor beneath you.
Connect your heart to the room around you.
Each time the thought arises, you allow it to dissolve.
Gradually the words themselves begin to soften. Instead of forming full sentences in your mind, you may simply notice the impulse that would create the words.
And even that impulse is allowed to dissolve.
You are simply connecting… and letting go.
Again and again.
Becoming Fully Present
Something interesting begins to happen as you continue.
Your mind no longer has time to hold onto thoughts.
They appear… and they disappear.
Thoughts about the future cannot settle.
Memories from the past cannot stay.
You simply experience the flow of awareness as it moves through your body and your surroundings.
In that moment you may notice something very simple.
You are present.
Completely.
Your breathing softens.
Your body begins to feel lighter.
And the tension that seemed so real a few minutes ago often starts to fade.
Extending Kindness
Once this state begins to deepen, the connection can expand even further.
Connect your heart to the people you love.
Allow the feeling to reach them and then let the thought go.
Then connect your heart to those you find more difficult.
Not as an effort. Not as a struggle.
Simply as a gentle act of kindness.
And again, let the thought go.
This simple act reminds us that we are part of something far bigger than our own thoughts.
Connecting Beyond Yourself
Now extend this awareness outward.
Connect your heart to the town you live in.
Connect your heart to the country around you.
Then expand even further.
Connect your heart to the entire world.
Each time the connection appears, you allow it to pass. You are not clinging to anything.
You are simply letting life flow.
The Moment Everything Becomes Quiet
Eventually something quite profound begins to occur.
You notice that the moment you think something… it has already passed.
Even the idea of “now” disappears.
There is no past to hold onto.
There is no future to chase.
And in that moment, something inside becomes very still.
You are simply present energy moving through the world.
When this happens, many people naturally begin to notice their body again.
The weight of the chair beneath them.
The space in their back.
The freedom in their breathing.
And often the aches and pains they arrived with have softened or disappeared entirely.
Returning to the Room
After a few moments, you gently return your full awareness to the room.
Notice where you are.
Notice how your body feels now compared to when you began.
Most people find they feel calmer, clearer and far more present than before.
Not because they forced anything to change.
But because they allowed thoughts to arise… and then simply let them go.
Experience the Practice Yourself
Reading about this exercise is one thing.
Experiencing it is something entirely different.

A Gentle Invitation
If you have been feeling overwhelmed, stuck in your thoughts, or noticing new aches appearing in your body as life becomes busier, it may simply be your system asking for a reset.
This is the work I guide people through every day.
Quietly returning to themselves.
Releasing what they have been carrying.
And rediscovering the ease that was always there beneath the noise.
If you would like to experience this for yourself, you are very welcome to reach out and explore a session together.
Sometimes all it takes is a small shift in awareness for everything else to begin changing.
